Salisbury, NC (WLTX) -- Officials with Food Lion's parent company announced Thursday that they plan to close 113 stores across the nation, including two in the Midlands.
Officials with Delhaize America said the stores found at 709 Kendall Road in Newberry and 100 Highway 321 Bypass in Winnsboro will each close.
Delhaize officials said the move was part of "key strategic actions" to close under performing stores.
The other locations that are planned to close, mostly located in the Lowcountry and Upstate, are found in Anderson, Fort Mill, Greenville, Greer, Hilton Head Island, Inman, Laurens, Moncks Corner, Mount Pleasant, and Spartanburg.
Each store scheduled to close will do so within 30 days, according to the release. In the release, officials said they plan to "accelerate the roll out of the Food Lion brand strategy in an additional 600 to 700 stores."
The change is expected to affect 4,900 employees, said Delhaize America CEO Ron Hodge.
Delhaize officials said it would close 13 other stores they own, known as "Bloom" and "Bottom Dollar Food." Most of those stores are found in Virginia, with a sole Maryland Bloom location closing, as well as a North Carolina Bottom Dollar Food store as well.
Officials said the Bloom brand will be retired once the stores have closed, and the remaining 64 Bloom and Bottom Dollar Food stores in Maryland, North Carolina and Virginia will be converted to Food Lion Stores. Those conversions will begin immediately, according to company officials.
A distribution center in Clinton, TN is also scheduled to be closed.
Officials said the company will provide severance to eligible associates, and will work with government officials to assist with "transition support."
Company officials say they encourage current employees to apply for open positions within the company, saying that most of the affected store employees "will continue to work at these locations."
Also, a Food Lion store in Lake City, FL, is scheduled to change its branding to a "Harvey's" store.
Organizers say after the changes are put in place, 1,127 Food Lion stores will be available in 10 states.
"By closing under performing stores, we will continue to position Food Lion for success, especially in light of our brand strategy results," said Food Lion President Cathy Green Burns. "We look forward to accelerating the Food Lion strategy and bringing the strategy to life in an additional 600 to 700 stores."
Burns said the company expects to complete its plan by the end of 2012.
