Columbia, SC (WLTX) - A Midlands 6th grader along with a classmate are working to raise $28,000 to pay for the salary of one teacher at Jubilee Academy.

Chalmers Allen is a student at Hammond and was given an assignment called The Kingdom Project.

"I've been to Jubilee a lot and have made friends with a lot of the kids there.  I helped out when they moved into their new building," said Allen.

Along with classmate Issac Michael, Chalmers wants to raise the $28,000 to pay for one teachers salary for one year.

"He came when we moved in and helped.  He did all kinds of screwing things with the power tools.  He loved the power tools," said Sandee Hensley, Headmistress of Jubilee Academy.  "He has a heart for what we're doing here."

The project is based off the movie Pay It Forward.

Allen was given $100 and charged with making it turn into more.

"It (the school) takes people out of the inner city of Columbia and gives them a chance at a good education which everyone deserves," said Allen.

Chalmers has been working on the project for about two weeks and has already raised $3,000. He has until February to raise $25,000 more.
