Irmo, SC (WLTX) -- The South Carolina Association of School Administrators named Nursery Road Elementary School Principal Dr. Christina Melton the South Carolina Elementary School Principal of the Year.
The Lexington-Richland 5 principal was chosen from a group of administrator candidates who were each judged on criteria established by the National Association of Elementary School Principals.
Dr. Melton was given her award Tuesday during a surprise announcement.
"We are very pleased that Christina has been named as the SCASA Elementary Principal of the Year," said Molly Spearman, executive director of the South Carolina Association of School Administrators in a Tuesday news release.
"She is an outstanding individual and dedicated educator," Spearman said, "She serves as a champion for all students."
District superintendent Dr. Stephen Hefner said Dr. Melton is known for her passion, drive and "clear vision of excellence."
"She is known for pulling together whatever forces are needed to achieve the desired end," Dr. Hefner said.
The award was sponsored by VIRCO.
