Explosion in Lab at South Carolina State University

Orangeburg, SC (WLTX) - There has been an explosion in a laboratory on the campus of South Carolina State University, public safety officials confirm.

The explosion took place Monday afternoon at the Orangeburg college just after 4 p.m.

A school spokesperson said the chemcial explosion was in a room at the Leroy Davis Science Complex.

Police say about 10 to 15 people were in the lab at the time of the explosion. Four students and one teaching assistant were taken to the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg, and police say their injuries appear to be non-life threatening.

Search teams went through the building to make sure there were no additional victims.

Approximately 30 public safety officers responded to the campus. Police say there was no danger to the surrounding area.

The building was closed for Monday evening for decontamination, and was expected to reopen Tuesday afternoon.
